The Social Determinants of Health Inequities Lab
|
At our core, we are committed to conducting research which highlights the ways in which unequal social status and treatment in society affect health. More specifically, we ask questions such as – what social factors most strongly influence the link between discrimination and blood pressure? Does early life shape cardiovascular health in adulthood? Does darker skin tone constitute poorer health? Does stress impact stroke risk among Blacks and Whites? Does poverty shape behavior or psychosocial resources available to Blacks and Whites?
To address these questions, we use multiple technological approaches – ambulatory blood pressure and heart rate variability monitoring, ecological momentary assessment, magnetic resonance imaging, and laboratory psychophysiology measures.
We are currently working on several manuscripts to top tier journals which prospectively examine the relations of discrimination, racism, early life adversity, and sociodemographic factors to risk factors for cardiovascular disease endpoints.
